Bonus blackjack rules
Blackjack Bonus is a variant of 21 developed by Microgaming which features additional payouts for players, and is playable in standard, Gold and Gold multi-hand versions. The rules are the same in all titles, but the Gold series options offers superior graphics and a larger table to play at. We have found the best sites to play the title at for real money, and clarify whether or not you can find it at land-based venues.

How to play Blackjack Bonus online
As we mentioned above, both Bonus Blackjack and the Gold versions offer the same rules, but the table limits vary as follows.
- Bonus Blackjack – Minimum: $1, Maximum $200
- Bonus Blackjack Gold – Minimum $5, Maximum: $500
- Premier Bonus Blackjack Gold Multi Hand – Minimum: $1, Maximum $200 (per hand)
The gameplay follows normal blackjack rules, with extra additions including the American hole card format – the hole card is dealt to the dealer and if it reveals an Ace or 10 value card then the dealer checks for blackjack.
Bonus blackjack is also played with a smaller number of decks – two instead of the usual six or eight decks – which is favourable to the player (house edge decreases when the number of decks decreases).
Additionally, the following rules are included in the Bonus Blackjack titles:
The dealer must Hit on Soft 17s- 10s can be split even if they aren’t the same in number (e.g. a 10 and a face card)
- If players Split an Ace and land a 10 value card, it counts as 21 not Blackjack
- Players can split up to four hands
- Aces can only be split once with a single card dealt to each
- Double Down on any two cards is available
- Double Down after Split is available
- Insurance is available
- No Surrender
Standard blackjack payouts
For standard gameplay, not including the bonus bets, the payouts are as follows:
- Blackjack pays 3:2
- A winning hand (beating the dealer by getting closer to 21) pays 1:1
- Insurance pays 2:1
What’s more, there are also bonus payouts for the game – hence the name Bonus Blackjack.
Bonus payouts
The payouts by making a bonus bet are as follows:
- Jack and Ace of Spades pays 50:1
- A Jack and Ace of the same suits pays 25:1
- Any two cards of the same suits pays 5:2
In order to get the payout, you do need to make the bonus bet – this needs to be done at the beginning of each hand with a minimum of $1 and a maximum of $25 per hand. These extra payouts are quite appealing to players, and ultimately affects the house edge in the player’s favour.
When you do play the perfect basic strategy, the house edge is as low as 0.38% on Microgaming’s Bonus Blackjack titles.
Blackjack Bonus land-based variants
There’s no specific titles at land-based venues called Bonus Blackjack. This title is reserved for Microgaming-powered casinos only. However, you may find similar titles with one or more of the available bonus payouts won by placing bonus bets – but there may not be two decks involved.
Nevertheless, it is important to note at land-based casinos the house edge is always higher than it is online, so even with these favourable bonus payouts (if you manage to find them) you’re better off playing online, especially with such a low house edge on Microgaming’s Bonus Blackjack titles.
