Known as the ‘Monte Carlo of the Orient’, Macau is one of the biggest gambling hubs in the world, more well known for its casinos and integrated resorts than for anything else, but where does Macau stand when it comes to online gambling? We’ve provided an overview of Macau’s online gambling laws and explained whether it is legal for Macau residents to place real money bets online.

Overview of Macau’s gambling laws
Home to over 30 brick and mortar casinos, Macau is a thriving gambling hub and popular destination for Chinese nationals and foreigners looking to throw some money around at world-class integrated resorts. In fact, gambling is so popular in Macau that the region now rivals Las Vegas as the global leader when it comes to revenue earned from gambling. Attracting many visitors from mainland China where casino gambling is illegal, Macau’s gambling industry now accounts for over 50% of the region’s economy. Macau’s casinos are particularly popular with high rollers from Asia, where the VIP baccarat tables draw many hi-stake players.
The Macau Gaming Inspection and Coordination Bureau (Direcção de Inspecção e Coordenação de Jogos or DICJ) is the main authority responsible for overseeing Macau’s gambling laws, operating under the legal framework of the Macau Gaming Law (Law 16/2001) which covers all commercial gambling operations including casino games, lottery, sports betting, horse racing, electronic gaming machines, gaming credit law and junket commissions. The DICJ works closely with the Public Security Police Force of Macau to control the gambling industry, regularly busting illegal gambling rings that include proxy betting and junket operators.
Is online gambling legal in Macau?
As a Special Administrative Region of China, Macau’s gambling laws differ from the Chinese mainland, but strict rules and laws still apply.
Macau’s Gaming Law does allow privately-owned entities to run online gambling operations, provided they have been issued a Macanese license to do so, but to date no Macau licenses have been issued, resulting in many Macanese residents gambling at offshore casino sites. With gambling accounting for so much of Macau’s revenue, it’s surprising the government hasn’t done more to regulate the online gambling industry, but for now, no such regulated market exists and there doesn’t appear to be any penalty for players found gambling at international casino sites. It’s probably safe to assume this will change in the future as a crackdown on online gambling in Macau seems highly likely.
Online casinos accepting Macau players
Unlike neighbouring China where online gambling is strictly forbidden, Macau players seem to have it pretty easy if they want to place real money bets online at foreign-run casino sites. However, given Macau’s close association with China (where online gambling sites are blacklisted and blocked) some offshore casino operators do choose to restrict players from Macau.
For the best, most reputable online casino sites accepting Macau players, refer to our casino table above. These leading casino sites are legally licensed by trusted foreign gambling jurisdictions, offering a wide range of games from award-winning software developers to suit all bankrolls, from casual players to high-rollers. You can use the links in our table to read detailed reviews of each casino site, or sign up for an account directly to take advantage of some excellent new player welcome bonuses.
MOP deposit options
Most offshore casino sites won’t accept payments using the Macanese pataca (MOP), but that doesn’t mean Macau players can’t deposit real money – it simply means their money will be converted into a more widely accepted currency and exchange fees may apply. Most online casinos support payments in GBP, EUR, USD, CAD, AUD, NZD, SEK and NOK, although you will come across others from time to time.
The most popular deposit options at online casinos include Visa, MasterCard, Neteller, Skrill, Paysafecard, ecoPayz, EntroPay and direct bank transfers, although this varies between each casino and some country-specific payment methods are also on offer. Read our detailed guide to depositing money at online casinos to find out more about the different payment methods available for Macanese players. Our recommended online casino sites are backed up by helpful customer service teams, so you can always use the FAQ or live chat function if you have any questions about the MOP payment methods available to you.
